A comparison from the makers of Diskfern

Best disk space analyzers for Mac: choose by workflow

The useful choice depends on your job: inspecting folders, managing a Mac, or recovering lost files. Here are seven options, with their documented strengths and limits.

Last fact-checked:

How we compared these options

Short answer

Start with macOS Storage for a quick overview. Choose a dedicated map or size browser if it leaves folder questions unanswered. CleanMyMac makes sense for a broader maintenance session; Disk Drill belongs on the shortlist when recovery or duplicates matter. Diskfern offers multiple views and named categories and is coming soon.

About this comparison

This comparison is published by Diskfern. Competitor information is based on publicly available vendor websites and documentation and was checked on the date shown. We highlight where each product may be a better fit rather than naming a universal winner.

Diskfern is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the products or companies mentioned on this page. Product names and trademarks belong to their respective owners.

How to read the evidence

Competitor details come from vendor documentation; Diskfern details come from our product information. Recommendations interpret those workflows. We did not run head-to-head tests or independently audit privacy or safety. A feature we could not verify is marked as not documented, which does not mean it is absent. Pricing and requirements can change.

Diskfern is coming soon. Explore its features and pricing before deciding which workflow fits your Mac.

Understand a file before you remove it.

Diskfern can explain what a file is, why it’s taking space, and whether it’s safe to remove. Your questions and answers stay on your Mac.

Requires macOS 26+ and an eligible Mac with Apple Intelligence enabled and its model ready. Core storage analysis works without it.

AI answers can be wrong or unavailable. Use them as guidance and review the file before removing it.

Compare the documented options

DaisyDisk

Choose DaisyDisk if you prefer sunburst navigation, need its documented cloud integrations, or want a one-time personal license.

Choose DaisyDisk when circular folder navigation is how you prefer to investigate. It includes Quick Look and staging, so you can inspect candidates before deleting.

Main interface

Sunburst with folder drill-down.

CleanMyMac

Choose CleanMyMac if you want cleanup, malware tools, maintenance and app management in one suite.

If you would otherwise use separate tools for maintenance, malware checks and app updates, CleanMyMac's scope can be the reason to choose it. Compare which modules you'll actually use rather than counting features.

Main interface

Task-based suite plus Space Lens bubble map.

GrandPerspective

Choose GrandPerspective if you want a free open-source treemap with configurable colors and advanced filters.

GrandPerspective suits people who like shaping the display and filters themselves. Color choices and path/property filters can support a specific investigation rather than a general cleanup session.

Main interface

Treemap with customizable colors and navigation.

OmniDiskSweeper

Choose OmniDiskSweeper if you want a free largest-first browser with direct Open and Trash actions.

OmniDiskSweeper's documented workflow puts size ordering first. If a list answers your question, you can browse, open something to inspect it, or send it to Trash without choosing a visualization.

macOS Storage settings

Choose macOS Storage settings if you need a quick included overview, large-document review or Apple's optimization recommendations.

For a straightforward overview, Storage settings avoids an extra download. Its category dialogs can be enough to locate a large download or review installed apps.

Disk Drill

Choose Disk Drill if recovery is your main requirement, or you want its documented free duplicate and cleanup extras.

If your files are missing, recovery capability is the relevant requirement. Disk Drill addresses that job; Diskfern does not offer data recovery. A recoverability preview and the license limits matter more than a disk-map preference.

Main interface

Recovery interface; cleanup guide describes a largest-first list with size bars. The detailed guide is older, not a hands-on check of the current UI.

How to narrow your shortlist

Choose the job before the tool

A recovery license, a maintenance suite and a disk map solve different problems. If all you need is one large download, the built-in overview or a size browser may be sufficient.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best disk space analyzer for Mac?

There isn’t one universal choice. Select by preferred view, your OS, whether you need cleanup or recovery, and the license terms.

Which options are free?

macOS Storage is included; GrandPerspective’s standalone download and OmniDiskSweeper are free. Disk Drill documents free cleanup extras. Diskfern’s Free analysis tier is coming soon.

Do all these tools delete files through Trash?

No. DaisyDisk documents permanent collector deletion. Other apps have module-specific or selectable modes. Review the current action before confirming.

Do they all support my older Mac?

Requirements vary by release. Check the compatibility entry and its vendor source; unverified requirements are explicitly marked.

Should I buy a maintenance suite for one storage check?

Only if you also need its other tools. A built-in overview, map or size browser may answer the immediate question.

Were these apps tested against each other?

No. Competitor details were checked against official vendor documentation. This is a feature and workflow comparison, not a hands-on speed or safety ranking.
